There is something special about the first cup of coffee in the morning.
The house is quiet. The day hasn’t started asking questions yet. No decisions need to be made, no problems need to be solved, and nobody needs an answer—at least not for a few peaceful minutes.
It’s just me, my coffee, and Jesus.
Now, let me be honest: coffee helps. That first warm sip feels like a little bit of encouragement in a cup. But as much as I enjoy it, coffee can only wake up my body. Jesus is the One who awakens my soul.
Before I scroll, plan, worry, or start carrying things God never asked me to carry, I need time with Him.
Some mornings, that time looks like reading my Bible and filling a page with notes. Other mornings, it’s a simple prayer whispered between sips:
“Jesus, thank You for another day. Please lead me through it.”
That’s it. Nothing fancy. No perfect words. Just an honest heart meeting a faithful Savior.
The Bible tells us that Jesus also made room for quiet time with the Father:
“Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.”
—Mark 1:35
If Jesus intentionally stepped away from the noise to pray, I know I need to do the same.
The truth is, life can make us believe that rest is unproductive. We feel pressured to keep moving, keep building, keep doing, and keep proving. But sometimes God’s invitation is simply to sit with Him.
To breathe.
To listen.
To remember that we are loved before we accomplish one single thing.
I recently had to remind myself of that. I rested—and then I expanded. Not because I pushed harder, but because rest gave me room to hear God again. It helped me remember that I don’t have to force what He has already promised to guide.
That morning cup of coffee has become more than a routine for me. It is a reminder to slow down and begin the day in the right order: Jesus first, everything else after.
The coffee may get cold. The day may become busy. Plans may change before breakfast is over. But when I begin with Jesus, I don’t enter the day alone. I enter it grounded, covered, and led.
So tomorrow morning, before the world starts pulling at you, pour yourself a cup. Find a quiet corner. Open your Bible—or simply open your heart.
Jesus will meet you there.
Coffee in hand.
Faith in heart.
Gospel fed. Jesus led.
